

If we were to write a manifesto it would be titled Good Behaviour is Profitable. Good behaviour isn’t just about please and thank-you, it’s about the decisions we make every day that take us closer to where we want to be. We all know that for every action there’s a reaction, but how often do we ignore the downside of our decisions, the impact on others, in favour of self-justification and short-term gain..?
See, we don’t believe ethics and success are mutually exclusive. Quite the opposite. Any organisation needs led; it can be 1 person or, ideally, a leadership group. In order for people to buy into the organisation, there should be a set of tangible measures that everyone understands and feels comfortable with. That leader(ship) then sets out the vision and principles by which they live.
You can adopt the survival of the fittest, natural selection, win at any cost approach – many have done. If profit is your one sole aim then you will tread on a lot of people, you will leave casualties, you will hire and fire as your needs dictate and you will take full advantage of any weakness in customer, supplier or staff.
‘But that’s what a free-market economy is about’, I hear the man with the tackety boots in the front row cry! And he’s about to call me a Guardian-reading, open-toed-sandal-wearing, falafel-loving, bleeding-heart liberal…before I stop him.
‘Why do you do what you do?’, I ask.
‘To make money! Isn’t that what everyone wants?’
‘Do you enjoy what you do?’
‘Only if it makes money!’, he tries a comedic put down.
‘What if I could show you 10 similar sized businesses that make lots ofcoin because they love what they do?’
And that my loyal reader is the point. Profit is a result of the people within, and those you deal with, understanding your vision, your purpose, your passion for why you do what you do. It’s infectious!
Everyone should try it. We do what we do because we want to make a difference and that works best when we’re working with owners and managers who believe what we believe.
